Far away times in the late 90s

I was lucky enough to work in the Smokestack and the odd shift at the Basement many moons ago. Also lucky to be pals with the crew there at the time. I had actually got the job after being at one of the legendary staff nights out (possubly at what used to be a club on Picardy Place). This is where I first encountered Richard and his generousity. I remember thinking he might be a bit scary being the boss and been as how I was essentially gatecrashing. He couldnt have been more welcoming and inclusive. This continued on to when I was working for him. The atmosphere was always fun, tipping into riotous after hours but everyone also cared about the place and worked their asses off. I firmly believe that was because of the mutual respect that was fostered. He certainly was big and grumpy at times but aren’t we all! I still to this day tell people about how the staff had use of the local gym and how involved the guys got in the 5 aside football, the fact they fed us well and just generally were brilliant human beings. I’ve never forgotten that feeling of being made welcome and I sincerly hope Richard knew the posituve impact he had on our lives. X
